Requirements Met: Diversity & Cultural Competency
Overview: There has been a growing demand from clients to work with therapists who match their identity. However, the supply of culturally competent therapists has not yet met the growing demand. Too often, our graduate school training relies on quick heuristics, generalizations, or cultural stereotypes that limit the depth of understanding and experience of clients of diverse backgrounds. For therapists with nondominant identities, this has often led to reliance on one’s own experience, which provides only a partial view of the diversity within their broad, diverse identity groups.
This continuing education seeks to explore some of the broad themes that impact clients and therapists of non-dominant identities, and ways therapists of all identities can grow our ability to support the diverse experiences of the people we work with.
